SUMMARY:Flag Day
DESCRIPTION:Flag Day is the American holiday honoring the adoption of the Stars and Stripes on June 14\, 1777\, when the Second Continental Congress resolved: “the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes\, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars\, white in a blue field\, representing a new constellation.” Pushed by advocates like teacher Bernard J. Cigrand starting in 1885\, it became official when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it in 1916\, with Congress cementing National Flag Day in 1949.

SUMMARY:Happy Birthday\, Coast Guard
DESCRIPTION:The United States Coast Guard\, one of the country’s five armed services\, is a unique agency of the federal government. We trace our history to 4 August 1790\, when the first Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws and to prevent smuggling. Known variously through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the Revenue Marine and the Revenue Cutter Service\, we expanded in size and responsibilities as the nation grew. \nThe service received its present name in 1915 under an act of Congress when the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the Life-Saving Service. The nation then had a single maritime service dedicated to saving life at sea and enforcing the nation’s maritime laws. The Coast Guard began to maintain the country’s aids to maritime navigation\, including operating the nation’s lighthouses\, when President Franklin Roosevelt ordered the transfer of the Lighthouse Service to the Coast Guard in 1939. In 1946 Congress permanently transferred the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation to the Coast Guard\, thereby placing merchant marine licensing and merchant vessel safety under our purview. The Coast Guard took over the administration of bridges over navigable waterways in 1967. \nSource: US Coast Guard – US Coast Guard History

SUMMARY:Patriot Day
DESCRIPTION:Patriot Day commemorates the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 when al-Qaeda hijackers crashed four planes into the World Trade Center\, the Pentagon\, and a Pennsylvania field\, killing nearly 3\,000 people. Established by Congress in December 2001 (P.L. 107-89) and first observed in 2002\, it honors the innocent lives lost\, first responders’ heroism\, and national unity. Often paired with the National Day of Service and Remembrance (since 2009)\, Americans fly flags at half-staff and observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. EDT. \nNote: This differs from Patriots’ Day in April\, which marks the 1775 Battles of Lexington and Concord in some states.

SUMMARY:Happy Birthday\, Air Force
DESCRIPTION:The history of the Air Force dates back to the Signal Corps when it began testing its first airplane at Fort Myer\, Virginia\, on August 20\, 1908\, and on September 9\, Lt Thomas E. Selfridge\, flying with Orville Wright\, was killed when the plane crashed. Subsequently\, after more testing with a second\, improved Wright Flyer\, the Army formally accepted this airplane\, identified as “Airplane No. 1\,” on August 2\, 1909. From the Air Service to the Army Air Corps\, the Air Force as it is now known was officially created under the National Security Act of 1947. It created the Department of the Air Force\, headed by a Secretary of the Air Force. Under the Department of the Air Force\, the act established the United States Air Force\, headed by the Chief of Staff\, USAF. On September 18\, 1947\, W. Stuart Symington became Secretary of the Air Force\, and on September 26\, Gen. Carl A. Spaatz became the USAF’s first Chief of Staff. \nSource: US Air Force – The Birth of the United States Air Force \n

SUMMARY:Happy Birthday\, Navy
DESCRIPTION:“Let Americans disdain to be the instruments of European greatness! Let the thirteen States\, bound together in a strict and indissoluble Union\, concur in erecting one great American system\, superior to the control of all transatlantic force or influence\, and able to dictate the terms of the connection between the old and the new world!” \nSo ended Alexander Hamilton’s essay (no. 11 of the Federalist Papers\, 1787) on the crucial role a navy would play in safeguarding America’s commerce and reputation. The essay also laid out all the hopes of the new nation: peace\, prosperity\, and respect from the mighty nations of Europe. Yet the Navy’s creation and development proceeded piecemeal and haltingly in face of seemingly intractable political\, ideological\, and economic obstacles. It took a quarter century for the Navy to emerge as a stable institution\, and although we now celebrate the birthday of the Navy on 13 October\, that date in 1775 is but one of several important steps on the way to a permanent naval defense force for the American people. \nSource: Naval History and Heritage Command \n

SUMMARY:Happy Birthday\, Marines
DESCRIPTION:On November 10\, 1775\, the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that “two Battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea\, these first Marines distinguished themselves in a number of important operations\, including their first amphibious raid into the Bahamas in March 1776\, under the command of Captain (later Major) Samuel Nicholas. The first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines\, Nicholas remained the senior Marine officer throughout the American Revolution and is considered to be the first Marine Commandant. The Treaty of Paris in April 1783 brought an end to the Revolutionary War and as the last of the Navy’s ships were sold\, the Continental Navy and Marines went out of existence. \nFollowing the Revolutionary War and the formal re-establishment of the Marine Corps on 11 July 1798\, Marines saw action in the quasi-war with France\, landed in Santo Domingo\, and took part in many operations against the Barbary pirates along the “Shores of Tripoli”. \nSource: USMC History Division

SUMMARY:Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is observed annually on November 11\, for honoring military Veterans of the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with holidays in several countries\, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day\, which also occur on the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. Veteran organizations\, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.
